Similar issue here. I've MSN Messenger 7.5.0324 with Messenger Plus! 3.63.148, running over Win XP SP2 and AWM 4.3, and double clicking on its taskbar icon only works fine if the taskbar itself is having the focus. Otherwise, the first click is used to take the focus, and the second one is interpreted as a single click that results in showing the contextual menu.
