I am running Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) with all of the available updates applied on a Lenovo T500 laptop. I am running AMM 5.0.3.

I run with two display configurations:

1. When I am docked, I run with two external 22" 16:10 LCD flat panels. The one display is connected via the DVI port on the docking station. The second display is connected to an HIS USB display adapter connected via DVI. Both displays are running at 1680x1050.

2. When I am undocked, I run off the laptop's display, a 15.6" at 1680x1050 resolution.

My problem:

I have always made sure I did separate saves of the desktop icons order for both dual-display and single display. The save confirmation dialogue even shows that it's saving for "1680x1050,1680x1050" or "1680x1050" (respectively). However, it seems when I switch from dual to single, the icon order always gets mixed up and the restore command never restores the icons to the saved layout. It doesn't seem to matter if the display switch happens from a cold boot after shutdown or from an undock.

It's really frustrating because this is the primary reason I opted to pay for AMM. Am I doing something wrong? Did I completely misunderstand what the point of this feature was? I've looked through any help I can find and, as far as I can tell, I seem to be using it correctly.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Joseph

In the first case - the laptop display is disabled, right?

Could you check whether this problem is associated with the docking station? Try to use the feature without docking - save the icons order on the laptop and manually change it and then try to restore.

Also could you try to connect the external monitor to your laptop without docking station and check whether the feature works?

Best regards.

Yes, when my laptop is docked, the lid is closed and the laptop display is disabled.

I will give this a try the next time I am running undocked.

Do you mean as a dual display (laptop display + external display) or just the external display without the docking station?

Regardless, to do this, I'll have to use a DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter that I have because my laptop doesn't have a DVI-D port. Only DisplayPort or VGA. Is that OK?

Thanks again for the response!

The following is while my laptop was undocked.

1. I sorted my desktop icons in the order I wanted them.
2. I logged off and then back on into my account. I have previously found with Windows that if I do not do this, Windows will not remember my icon placement.
3. I saved my icon settings through AMM.
4. I then moved one of my icons out of position.
5. I logged off and then back on.
6. My desktop icons were still in the unsorted arrangement.
7. I selected to restore my icon positions via AMM.
8. Nothing happened. The icons remained in their unsorted layout.

VGA is OK:)

Do you mean that whether you restart or shut down an then start your PC the icons order is the same as after the last procedure of log-off/log-on?

Could you give me screenshots of the View and Sort by submenus of the desktop context menu?

Best regards.

Hey, Bogdan. Sorry about the delay in a response.

Whenever a desktop icon gets added, removed, or the layout changes, I would have to log off and log back on after arranging them to my preferences. Otherwise the icons would be in some other order. If I restarted (or shutdown and start) my computer without doing this logout/logon trick after rearranging the icon layout, the layout would change to a layout that I did not choose.

As requested, here's a grab of my View submenu:

Here's a grab of my Sort By submenu:

If the behavior I'm seeing is related to these settings, let me know what I should change. Ideally, I want my desktop icons to stay in whatever order I have placed them but I would like them to snap to grid so they're in some orderly layout.

I still have not had a chance to try the dual display thing. I will try to do that as soon as my time permits.

Thanks again!

Hello Joseph

Try to disable the Auto arrange icons item.

Best regards.

At this point, it looks like my problem was solved simply by disabling the "Auto arrange icons" option.

Thanks again for all of your help!
